Incarcerated parents in the Washtenaw County Jail and
Milan Federal Prison read books on tape to their children with FBC volunteers. The books, tapes, and a tape recorder are then sent to each family.
Parents at local Head Start Programs and other area preschools earn free books for their children by reading aloud to them ten times a month. Family Book Club distributes hundreds of books each month through this program.
Doctors and nurses in various local low-cost clinics hand out a "Read Every Day" prescription to children who then get to select a new book to take home.
New mothers receive a small gift, an infant book and information about the value of reading to infants and children. This is done through partnerships with Michigan Visiting Nurses, Washtenaw County Public Health Department, and Catholic Social Services' Healthy Families.
Through a partnership with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Washtenaw County, Family Book Club provides annual magazine subscriptions for Little Brothers to read with their Big Brothers.
Weekly storytimes with themes, snacks, and accompanying craft activities are provided to children in low-income housing complexes. Children who attend regularly receive free books of their choosing.
