Much Appreciated

On May 7th, Family Book Club gathered to celebrate the many volunteers and friends who actively support our mission. Jenni Zimmer, Board President, conveyed her heartfelt appreciation to everyone there for their gifts of time, participation and funds. She then had the pleasure of introducing longtime FBC volunteer and Ann Arbor District Library director, Josie Parker, who told a story that matched the warmth, wit and good will in the room. When it came time for drawing the door-prize winners, first grader Henry K. delighted us with his showmanship. Before leaving the stage, Henry expressed pride in raising nearly $200 for FBC through his school’s “Read for a Cause” effort. The gorgeous quilt created by Rita Stark, Ann Antonuk and Marilyn Lange made a perfect backdrop for the event. All in all, the event was a relaxed way to connect and reconnect with our supporters. Thanks to everyone who came. We hope to see you again soon!

Family Book Club is grateful to our in-kind donors for making this special event possible:

Many Books, Many Thanks

Our 2008 Holiday Book Drive was another fabulous success! The FBC received over 3,000 new books. These books will provide hundreds of children and families in Washtenaw County with the much-needed opportunity to read. (You can find out more about FBC literacy programs and how we distribute books by clicking here.) The FBC is grateful to Borders Books and Music, and their amazing managers and staff, for sponsoring this annual event. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the thousands of individuals in our community who purchased books in support of the FBC mission. Your generosity is unparalleled.

Josie Parker - Our Hero

Ann Arbor District Library head Josie Parker made a daring save in the name of books, while volunteering for FBC’s annual gift-wrapping fundraiser at Borders. When a thief ran out the door with the FBC donation box, Josie instinctively gave chase. She managed to save the donations – and the day! – but broke her leg. We admire Josie’s impassioned courage and wish her a speedy recovery.

Read about Josie in a news article and a Letter to the Editor printed in the Ann Arbor News.
